When considering hiring a home improvement contracting PRO, there are many factors to consider. Here are at least four things that homeowners should make sure not to forget:

  1. Experience and Qualifications:
Check a contractor’s qualifications, licenses, certifications, and any relevant affiliations with professional organizations.
  2. Reputation and References:
Check a contractor’s reputation by reading online reviews. Request references from previous clients and follow up with them to learn about their experiences and satisfaction with the contractor’s work. If possible, reviewing pictures of their past work can also be helpful.
  3. Insurance and Licensing:
Ensure that the contractor you hire is properly insured. Insurance should cover both workers’ compensation and general liability to protect you from any potential accidents or damages that may occur during the project. Valid licensing demonstrates that the contractor meets local requirements and adheres to industry standards.
  4. Clear Contract and Communication:
Before hiring a contractor, ensure that they provide a detailed, written contract that outlines the scope of work, project timeline, materials to be used, payment terms, and any warranties or guarantees. Good communication is crucial, so make sure the contractor is responsive, attentive to your needs, and willing to address any concerns or questions you may have.

Remember, it’s important to interview multiple contractors, compare their estimates, and trust your instincts when making a decision. Taking the time to find a reputable and reliable contractor can save you potential headaches and ensure a successful home improvement project.

Like many families, my wife and I rented until we could finally afford to purchase a home. We were thankful to be homeowners, but the catch was, the home needed a lot of work! Home prices were high and we prioritized location to work and community over aesthetics, which really meant, after purchasing the home, we did not have much set aside to renovate. Everything we decided that had to be renovated was critical to making the house feel like a home.

When we decided to renovate, we quickly realized we didn’t know any contractors. Sure, we had a family friend-of-a-friend referral and a referral from our real estate agent, but we really had no idea of their background or who could help us. Like everyone in that situation, we started taking appointments. Here’s a basic question, when you want to install an interior door where only a wall exists, what’s the best option? The first contractor we met, we ended up hiring (due to time constraints – it took a week just to schedule a single appointment!) and listened to their advice, which was that we could not install a door where we wanted because the wall was load bearing. Well…two months later (and thousands of dollars already spent), we learned, not only could we install a door where we wanted (by using a supporting beam), we could also add double French doors! This is one small example that receiving several opinions from experienced, creative, PROs can save substantial time and project funds.

Through this process, I’ve come to learn that home projects are often severely limited not by budget, but instead by the amount of qualified contractor opinions you receive for your actual project.

HutSolver provides you with several qualified opinions for your actual project before a PRO sets foot in your home, while ensuring that contractors are held to a high standard in not only starting, but also successfully completing your home project.

May you solve many home projects with creative ideas!
